Character History: Carol was born a fighter. As a girl, she was stubborn and determined and fought constantly with her sexist, stubborn, and determined father. He only had enough money to send one child to college and chose her brother, despite her better grades. Carol said screw that and joined the Air Force, getting a college degree through the military rather than giving up on her hopes and dreams. This also let her pursue her lifelong dream of flying. Carol didn’t need to have superpowers to fly and fight. She was already doing that long before she became a superhero.

She distinguished herself in the army and got recruited into military Intelligence. Later, she resigned, taking a job as head of NASA security instead. This brought her into contact with the Kree warrior Captain Mar-Vell, known on Earth as Captain Marvel. She ended up playing the damsel in distress enough times that when she was knocked into a damaged Kree Psyche-Magnitron, a sort of wishing machine, all she wanted was to have to power to fight, to protect herself and others. When she came out of the machine, her genetic structure was altered, changing her into a superhuman with Kree DNA.

Initially, she was unaware of the changes that had occurred. Her NASA career tanked and she quit, writing a bestselling book about her time there. She became a celebrity writer after that, though her ties to NASA were burned, and she started working for J. Jonah Jameson on a magazine called WOMAN. They clashed heavily, as Carol refused to write only about make-up and shopping when there were more interesting things going on in the world, and because Carol herself started experiencing strange fainting spells when a dual personality called “Ms. Marvel” would take over and be a superhero. For a long time, Carol felt like she and Ms. Marvel were at war, and like Ms. Marvel’s heroic exploits were interfering with her own life and attempts at a career. Eventually she learned that she and Ms. Marvel were one and the same and the dual personality thing had just been her mind attempting to come to grips with her new powers.

She joined the Avengers after teaming up with them on several cases, only for her time to be cut short after a being named Marcus impregnated her with himself and then manipulated her into thinking he loved her so that she moved back into Limbo with him. It was a really weird time. He aged rapidly and died, she figured out his technology, and when she got back she got into a battle with the mutant Rogue, who sucked away all her powers and memories and left her floating under the Golden Gate Bridge. Spider-Woman rescued her, and Professor Xavier of the X-Men restored her memories, though her emotional ties to those memories were gone. She confronted the Avengers, telling them off for celebrating her pregnancy when it had clearly been unwanted and letting her go off with Marcus when she obviously hadn’t been in her own mind. She didn’t resume ties and instead started working with the X-Men, though she remained unpowered for most of this time and mostly aided them with her piloting skills. She also remained fast friends with Spider-Woman, who had saved her life.

Carol and a handful of X-Men ended up abducted by the Brood, who exposed her to an evolutionary ray that triggered her powers and sent them into overdrive. The X-Men invited Carol to join them, but she chose instead to pursue a lifelong dream and went off into space instead, taking on the new identity of Binary. Eventually she returned to Earth and burnt out her new powers saving the sun. The power loss left her emotionally drained and she took refuge in alcohol and nineties costumes, taking the name Warbird. Eventually, she overcame her alcoholism and other issues and proved herself worthy to be an Avenger again.

When Scarlet Witch had a breakdown and thrust the 616 universe into the House of M reality, Carol experienced a world where she was Captain Marvel, the most popular superhero alive. The experience inspired her to start working harder at being the best. She liked being an A-list superhero, and she wanted that experience again. She has always been ambitious, and though she had lost her way for so long, she knew she had it in her to be the best, so that became her goal.

Civil War marked a defining time for Carol. She registered, and worked with Iron Man to hunt down unregistered superheroes. Later, she felt pretty guilty about this, as she had ended up fighting a lot of her good friends while pursuing what she thought was right. She believes in following the law, and the law said register. In particular, the law said she had to arrest her friend right in front of her daughter, and for that she never stopped feeling guilty. After the war, she started leading the Avengers for a time, until the Secret Invasion of skrulls happened and Norman Osborn took over the team. Carol quit and joined the New Avengers instead. Karla Sofen took on the name Ms. Marvel and took her place on the Dark Avengers team. After Norman Osborne tried and failed to assassinate her, Carol fought Karla and defeated her, taking the moonstone that gave her powers. Carol believes in second chances, though, and she offers to give it back to Karla if she can redeem herself.

When the Phoenix Force came back to Earth, it resurrected Captain Mar-Vell. However, he gives up his life again to save the planet Hala. This helps Carol realize what he meant for her and she decides to take up his legacy, getting a new costume and taking the name Captain Marvel in place of Ms. Marvel. Unfortunately, she soon learns that she has a brain lesion that might burst and blow up her brain… leaving her alive but without memories if she flies. Carol loves flying, and finds staying on the ground extremely hard, especially when her friend Rose goes missing and bad guys from her past start attacking. A piece of the Psyche-Magnitron that she’s kept all these years is stolen from her apartment. It turns out that Yon-Rogg, the Kree that originally kidnapped her before she got her powers, is the one behind it. She also figures out that he’s using her brain to power it. She flies up until her brain lesion bursts, separating him from his power source and saving the day, but losing her memories. Carol will always do everything she can to save the day, even if it means losing a part of herself. That’s what heroes do.

The Mayor of New York rewards her with the keys to the statue of liberty after she gets evicted and lets her live there for a while, but when an opportunity comes to leave Earth and work with the Guardians of the Galaxy arises, Carol takes it. She flies a young alien named Tic back home and has to confront a problem she can’t punch her way out of. She and Tic and Tic’s friends prove that the reason people are getting sick is that Peter Quill’s father, J’son of Spartax, is benefiting from illegal mining and secure the planets’ independance, ensuring that the refugees who reside there can continue to reside there.

She intervenes when J’son splits up the Guardians and tries to force Peter to join him. They don’t take Carol into account, though, and with her help, the Guardians manage to expose J’son’s heartless murdering tendencies and get him deposed. She also learns that her angry pet cat, Chewie, is actually an alien called a flerken, and she was pregnant with a bunch of kittens. Rocket initially tries to kill the flerken, but upon learning that Chewie is the last of her kind, switches tactics and helps Carol defend her against bounty hunters.

Later, Carol sees a large poster of Peter’s face calling for people to vote him in as the new president of the Spartax empire. She finds this utterly hilarious. But before she has a chance to make fun of him properly, Peter and Kitty Pryde recover an artifact called the Black Vortex that can turn anyone into their most powerful and cosmic self. There’s a lot of argument between the Guardians of the Galaxy and the X-Men over what to do with the Black Vortex. Find a way to destroy it? Use it to make themselves more powerful so they can take on J’son and his superpowered thugs, who want the power of the Black Vortex for themselves? Mostly what they do is argue, and the Black Vortex changes hands a lot until finally Carol gets her hands on it, transporting it from Cyclops, who freed it from the Slaughter Lords, to Peter and Kitty. She has to fight Gara, the Black Vortex’s guardian, in order to get to it, and as they’re facing off she is tempted by the extra power it can offer her, the extra cosmic version of herself she sees in it. But she’s had that sort of power before. She’s already extremely powerful, so ultimately she decides she doesn’t need it. She hands it off to Kitty and Peter, and Kitty uses the power of the vortex to save a planet.

Finally, her stint with the Guardians of the Galaxy ends. She returns to Earth, but she’s too late to say goodbye to Tracy, her very old and very dear friend. She spends time with her loved ones, mourning Tracy and appreciating the time they still have with each other, in the small amount of downtime she has before the next crisis.

Abilities/Special Powers:

Energy Absorption: She can absorb energy blasts. They make her stronger, faster, and more powerful. They also are what power her photon blasts.

Photon Blasts: She can use the energy she’s absorbed to release powerful energy blasts. The more energy she’s absorbed, the stronger they end up. They’re mostly made of light, but they’ve got real force to them and can shove people back as hard as a punch.

Flight: This is Carol’s favorite power! She can fly. Both through air and the vacuum of space. Her top speed is unknown, but she can go at least three times the speed of sound for hours.

Enhanced Physical Abilities: Carol is strong enough to punch through a small planet on a good day. She can run faster than a normal human and has agility and reflexes to match. Her stamina and resistance to disease and injury are similarly high, and she heals faster and more thoroughly than normal humans.

Magic Wardrobe Change: She can use stored up energy to change the molecules of her outfit into her costume. Though logic would dictate she could do this to change her clothes into anything, she’s only ever been seen using this power to change from her costume to whatever she was wearing before she had her costume on, so apparently that’s the limit of that power.

Binary Form: If she absorbs supernova amounts of energy she takes her binary form. Her hair becomes fire and her strength and photon blast power reach insane levels. It takes a REALLY HIGH amount of energy to get her there.

Non-Super Abilities: She’s also an experienced pilot, spy, and combatant due to her military training. She can speak multiple languages, and she’s a great writer and journalist. She’s smart, too, despite punching things being her favorite strategy.

Third-Person Sample: Carol’s been in a lot of different worlds. By now she’s almost used to it.

But the complete lack of fanfare that’s involved her getting here is… unsettling. Usually there’s a portal or a fantasticar or at least a loud noise. But no. She’s just suddenly flying over some kind of countryside manor instead of the New York skyline. She frowns and flies down to land on the roof of the manor. Strange. And when she reaches into her pocket to try and see if she can raise any of the Avengers on her communicator, she finds a phone that definitely isn’t hers. It’s more useful than her phone would be, though, since flipping through it offers a wealth of information. Wonderland. She can honestly say that’s a new one. If she had to get sucked into a magical alternate reality based on a fictional universe, why couldn’t it have been Star Wars?

She needs a plan to escape and she needs to get in touch with her allies but first, she needs to fly as high as possible and see if there’s a way out. Some prisons forget that there are people who aren’t bound by gravity. At the very least, it never hurts to get the full view of places. She stands up and takes off, flying up as hard and fast as she can.

After a little while, she notices that she isn’t actually getting any higher. She slows to a stop, looking down at the world. She’s pretty high. But not as high as she should be for how long she’s been flying. She floats upwards experimentally, looking down. Yep. While there’s no actual resistance holding her back, she’s still not moving.

“Well, Danvers,” she says, staring around at Wonderland spread out beneath her. “If it were that easy to escape, they probably wouldn’t have caught you to begin with.”

She has work to do. She turns around and dives back towards the mansion, landing on the roof. Before walking inside, she changes back into her civilian clothes with a burst of light. No reason to attract too much attention. Not until it’s necessary.

First-Person Sample:

[Carol’s been getting her bearings in Wonderland for a few days now. Long enough that she’s become fairly familiar with the area. Long enough that she knows escape will not be easy. Long enough that she figures she may as well introduce herself to her fellow captives. She’ll need all the help she can get if she’s going to bust out.

She isn’t in costume when she turns on the video. Just normal civilian clothes. She’s not hiding her identity. It’s never been her style, and she knows this isn’t the first time she’s here. But sometimes casual is better. This isn’t the Avengers or the army. No reason to bust out her uniform immediately.]

Hi everyone. Name’s Carol Danvers. Or Captain Marvel, when I’m working. From what I’ve seen, I’ve been here before, or at least some version of me has. [She grimaces.] Honestly hoping for someone from an alternate reality. I’m really not in the mood to deal with amnesia.

[Been a little bit too much of a repeating theme in her life lately.]

Since it seems like I’m stuck here for the foreseeable future, thought I should get to know my fellow inmates. So hi. [She smiles.] Where are you all from?

[Private text to all Avengers she recognizes (those from 616 or with a 616 counterpart)]

Assemble.
